IPO Research Presented at INSOR Roundtable

March 5, 2009

The Institute of Contemporary Development hosted a roundtable on IPO in the CIS. Managers and analysts from the leading banks and investment groups, including Unicredit, Renaissance Capital, ING, Alfa Bank, Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank, discussed the report IPO Pioneers 4 released by The PBN Company. Following a catastrophic year on the stock market only 8 of 92 companies from Russia and the CIS that have gone public are now valued higher than at the time of placement. PBN’s research also pointed to 125 companies that could potentially hold IPOs if the market conditions improve.

While 2007 set a record for CIS placements and Russia was first in Europe in terms of funds attracted, in 2008 only 7 companies from the CIS went public and drew in a combined $1.7 billion.

INSOR Presents Research on Middle Class

The Institute of Contemporary Development (INSOR) organized a presentation of books “The Russian Middle Class Prior to and at the Peak of the Economic Upturn” and “The Russian Middle Class: Analysis of its Structure and Financial Behavior”. The key discussion point was whether the middle class is a victim of the crisis or whether it offers hope for the middle class’s future development.

The Institute of Contemporary Development held a seminar on information security, focusing on “Requirements and Application of Legislation on Personal Information”.
The discussion participants reviewed a new draft of the document “The role and place of information security and IT departments in a company: Recommendations on the creation of an information security department”.
Participants of the event included representatives of the State Duma, supporting staff of the Security Council, heads of federal agencies, IT directors, academics and experts of the Institute of Contemporary Development.

The Institute of Contemporary Development organized the roundtable discussion on “The Far East and the Trans-Baikal Region – Development Strategy”.   In his opening remarks the Institute’s Chairman Igor Yurgens emphasized the importance of this discussion. In his view, the government’s development strategy for this region should be updated and revised in response to the global financial crisis.   The roundtable discussion included representatives from regional governments as well as federal agencies and experts on regional development.

The key issues under discussion included methods for optimizing personnel costs by keeping the core staff intact and ensuring they fulfill their basic responsibilities.
The roundtable discussion was organized by the National Bureau of Human Capital together with INSOR and the Free Social Sciences Platform Foundation.

The Economic Crisis in Russia and Proposed Anti-Crisis Measures

The Institute of Contemporary Development (INSOR) held an expert discussion on the latest developments of the economic crisis in Russia and proposed anti-crisis measures. The discussion was lead by INSOR Chairman Igor Yurgens and centered on a report prepared by Anna Belova, director for corporate development at SUEK.

Participants of the discussion included INSOR management board members Evgeny Gontmakher and Lev Yakobson, President of the Institute of Energy and Finance Leonid Grigoriev, General Director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis Andrei Shastiko, Deputy Director of the Interdepartmental Analytical Center Yuri Simachev and INSOR advisors Andrei Blokhin and Nikita Maslennikov, among others.
