Global Policy Forum "The Modern State: Standards of Democracy and Criteria of Efficiency"

September 9, 2010

The international conference “The Modern State: Standards of Democracy and Criteria of Efficiency” was held on September 9 in Yaroslavl under the auspices of the President Dmitry Medvedev. The conference was organized by the Institute of Contemporary Development, the Institute of Social Research (INOP), and Yaroslavl Demidov State University.

Participants of the event gathered to measure efficiency of modern democratic states and to suggest criteria for such a measurement; to define the modern democracy standards and the impact of a modern state on the methods to react to challenges in the frame of regional and global security systems.

Discussion: Virtual Launch of Skolkovo Innovation Center

The Institute of Contemporary Development hosted an expert discussion devoted to a virtual launch of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. The corresponding document drafted as a result of the meeting will make part of a draft law to be submitted to the State Duma for a second reading.

The discussion was attended by the State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Stanislav Naumov; Chairman of the Information Policy and Information Technologies Subcommittee Ilya Ponomaryov, Head of the Skolkovo project working group Oleg Alekseev and a number of other experts and officials.

7th Tver Social and Economic Forum “Information Society”

July 8, 2010

On July 8-9, 2010 the Russian city of Tver hosted the 7th Social and Economic Forum. Organized by the Russian Manager’s Association and the Institute of Contemporary Development, this all-Russian event held under the patronage of the RF Presidential Administration and the Tver Region Administration. The Forum focused on the development of the country’s “Information Society” strategies and on formation of the e-Government.

The event gathered nearly 3,000 participants from 70 regions and 90 cities, and was attended by over 200 journalists from federal and local media. An opening address was made by the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev.

Roundtable discussion “Law on Mandatory Health Insurance: New Prospects or New Problems?”

July 5 the Institute of Contemporary Development hosted a roundtable on the law “On Mandatory Health Insurance: New Prospects or New Problems?”

The discussion was devoted to the law on mandatory health insurance, which gave rise to heated debates within the medical community. The first reading of the law drafted by the Ministry of Social Development of the Russian Federation is scheduled for July 7, 2010.

Roundtable “Sustainable Development of Municipal Entities and a Local Government: Patterns of Cooperation between Theoretical and Practical Experts”

The Institute of Contemporary Development hosted a roundtable entitled “Sustainable Development of Municipal Entities and a Local Government: Patterns of Cooperation between Theoretical and Practical Experts”.

The agenda comprised the following issues:

Skolkovo Project: Development of a Communication Strategy

The Institute of Contemporary Development conducted a strategic cession aimed at development of a communication platform for Russia’s Innovation Center Skolkovo. The event was attended by specialists from the related industries.

Workshop “Russia-NATO Relationship: Prospects of Transformation”

June 25, 2010

The Institute of Contemporary Development held a workshop entitled “Russia-NATO Relationship: Prospects of Transformation”. The event organized jointly with the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) gathered experts from Russia, the U.S. and Europe.

The discussion focused on the expansion of cooperation between Russia and The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, on ways to improve the cooperation and to enhance the existing dialogue etc. The experts also analyzed the pattern of development of NATO’s New Strategic Concept, which is to be completed in November.

As a result of the discussion, INSOR and IISS have agreed to continue cooperation intended to pave the way for a positive transformation of the Russia-NATO relationship.

Roundtable “Global Energy Market: Lessons of the Crisis and Development Prospects”

The Institute of Contemporary Development held a roundtable discussion “Global Energy Market: Lessons of the Crisis and Development Prospects”. The Committee on Energy Policy and Energy Efficiency of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) was a co-organizer of the event.

The roundtable discussion was attended by representatives of the business community, the executive power, and the leading research institutes specializing in the energy sector.

Roundtable "Social Projects: Enhancement of Management Patterns"

June 17, 2010

The Institute of Contemporary Development (INSOR) held a roundtable entitled  "Social Projects: Enhancement of Management Patterns". Participants of the event exchanged opinions on development of patterns of educational and healthcare management, and focused on the preliminary results of the relevant programs.

In his opening speech INSOR Management Chairman Igor Yurgens noted that the social sector could serve as the key ground for the country's integral modernization, and that a lack of activity in this sector could significantly affect our modernization prospects. After that Deputy Minister of Education and Science Vladimir Miklushevsky, who briefed the audience on the activities in the field pursued by the Ministry.
