Trilateral Commission Conference in Washington

INSOR Management Board Chairman of Igor Yurgens took part in the work of the annual conference of the Trilateral Commission. The meeting, organized by this authoritative international platform for research and discussion which includes leading statesmen, scholars and entrepreneurs from North America, Europe and Asia, was held April 24-27 in the US capital.

The conference was addresses by US Secretary of State John Kerry. Predictably, the Ukrainian crisis occupied a significant portion of his remarks. The exasperated tone of the remarks indicates that the Geneva agreement is failing to live up to its promise.

Igor Yurgens Takes Part in Meeting of Working Group of Trilateral Commission

March 5, 2014

A meeting of the working group tasked with preparing a report on relations between Russia and countries of the Trilateral Commission was held in Boston March 3-4. A key organizational issue was addressed at the meeting – the inclusion in the working group of Russian public and political figures. The final decision on this proposal will be made at the meeting of the Trilateral Commission on April 25 in Washington following consultations in Moscow.

The main issue on the agenda was the finalization of the outline and substantive sections of the planned report. It will include the following sections:

- the geopolitical significance of Russia

- Russia’s foreign policy

- the economic situation in Russia

- human rights and democracy in Russia

Centre for European Reform on the Outlook for the European Union

On February 19 in London, INSOR Management Board Chair Igor Yurgens took part in a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Reform, of which he has been a member since 2008. Following a discussion of general business, Mario Monti, a new member of the Advisory Board and former Prime Minister of Italy (2011-2013), presented a report on the present state of affairs of the European Union. The discussion that followed touched upon the most acute challenges facing the EU ahead (including the plan of the conservative government in Great Britain to withdraw from the union) as well as the passing of the most acute phase of the economic crisis, as evidenced by the growth seen in Ireland, Greece, Spain and Great Britain, where GDP growth last year reached a 6-year high.

50th Munich Security Conference

Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute of Contemporary Development Igor Yurgens took part in the 50th Munich Security Conference. The most pressing issues discussed at the forum were Syria, Ukraine and cybersecurity.

Europeans are most concerned about European security issues as military budgets shrink, while Americans are focused on their general role in the world and, of course, cooperation with the European Union and joint efforts in Asia. One of the key topics remains Afghanistan and the situation in the region following the withdrawal of the alliance’s forces. The entire Greater Middle East region also remains an area of heighten concerned.

Council of Councils Meets in Mexico

INSOR’s Director for International Development Sergey Kulik took part in the Council of Councils Mexico Regional Conference. The meeting was held in Mexico City November 24-26. The Council of Councils is an informal platform for the exchanging views and opinions among the leading think tanks from a group of countries which largely matches the G20. Russia is represented in the council by the Institute of Contemporary Development.

In addition to the G20’s ongoing and future work, much attention was given to the political and economic processes of the Western Hemisphere, the place of Latin America and the Caribbean Basin in global trade and economic arrangements, development of energy markets, fighting organized crime and drug trafficking.

Trilateral Commission Convenes European Meeting in Krakow

Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute of Contemporary Development Igor Yurgens took part in the European Conference of the Trilateral Commission in Krakow October 25-27. The Trilateral Commission is an international organization comprised of politicians, bankers, entrepreneurs and former statesmen of the ‘Greater West’ which has provided consultations to participating countries for over 40 years now.

15th International Conference of the Baltic Forum Held in Jurmala

The annual conference of the Baltic Forum was held October 25-26 in Jurmala, Latvia. The theme of this year’s gathering was “Transformations in Eurasia: the search for adequate responses to the challenges of our time.” Attention was focused on issues concerning the problems and prospects for cooperation from Lisbon to Vladivostok in such areas as:

  • International cooperation in strengthening Euro-Atlantic security;
  • A comprehensive approach to solving logistics tasks for the effective development of multimodal transport corridors
  • Energy cooperation between the EU and Russia and in Eurasia
