INSOR Experts Seek to Define Boundaries of the Middle Class

June 6, 2008

A group of sociological and economic experts met at the Institute of Contemporary Development (INSOR) to provide situational analysis aimed at defining the boundaries of the middle class in Russia. The meeting was moderated the INSOR Executive Board Member Evgeny Gontmakher (head of the Center for Social Policy, Institute of Economy, Russian Academy of Science).

The group is continuing work on INSOR's comprehensive research project launched in April aimed at defining Russia's middle class and recommending practical policy measures to increase this segment of the population in Russia. The Russian government has set a goal of increasing the middle class from the current 15-20% to 60% of the population by 2020.
