15th International Conference of the Baltic Forum Held in Jurmala

The annual conference of the Baltic Forum was held October 25-26 in Jurmala, Latvia. The theme of this year’s gathering was “Transformations in Eurasia: the search for adequate responses to the challenges of our time.” Attention was focused on issues concerning the problems and prospects for cooperation from Lisbon to Vladivostok in such areas as:

  • International cooperation in strengthening Euro-Atlantic security;
  • A comprehensive approach to solving logistics tasks for the effective development of multimodal transport corridors
  • Energy cooperation between the EU and Russia and in Eurasia

The conference participants included a number of well-known experts and politicians:  President of the Harmony Center party faction in the Latvian Seima and President of the Baltic Forum Jānis Urbanovičs; Riga Mayor Nils Ušakovs; Latvian Minister of Transport Anrijs Matīss; Viktors Makarovs, Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Igor Yurgens, Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute for Contemporary Development and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Baltic Forum;

Alexander Dynkin, Director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Alexei Arbatov, Director of the Center for International Security of the Institute for World Economy and International Relations; Igor Bunin, President of the Center for Political Technologies; Alexander Rahr, Senior Adviser Russia at Wintershall Holding GmbH, Advisor to the President of the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce and Scientific Director of the German-Russian Forum; Yang Jiemian, Chairman of the Council of Academic Affairs of Shanghai Institute of International Relations; and, Thomas Gomart, Vice President for strategic development and Director of the Russia/NIS Centre at the French Institute of International Relations, among others.

At the conference a presentation was made of the book Russia in the Baltic Labyrinth, written by Sergey Kulik, Director for International Development of the Institute for Contemporary Development, among others. An abridged version of the book in English is available here.
